The Shrubs – Fall Behind

Houston’s own power trio, The Shrubs, just dropped an absolute scorcher with their latest single, “Fall Behind,” and guys, it’s pure rocket fuel. Released on September 19th, 2025, this track shows the band’s come a long way – they’ve ditched those earlier melancholy vibes for a full-blown, surf-rock infused ripper.

The band—comprised of sibling core Josh and Miguel, alongside Miguel’s former co-worker Sophie—has been grinding since they signed with Blossom Records in 2019. Miguel took the reins on “Fall Behind,” having written the bones of it way back in 2019. But here’s the thing: those years of tweaking and perfecting seriously paid off. This isn’t some rushed job – it’s been forged through pure dedication and a crystal-clear vision from all three members.

The guitars are all drenched in reverb and sound like they’ve been baking in the California sun, weaving together and crashing down like the perfect wave. The whole thing’s so upbeat you can’t help but move to it. But The Shrubs are way too smart to let you off that easy. While you’re grooving to these bright, happy guitar lines, they’re hitting you with lyrics about the messy, painful side of breaking up. That push and pull is what makes this song stick.

And get this – that rough, authentic sound you’re hearing isn’t some happy accident. The band recorded everything at their home studio, Flowers on the Wall, down in Katy, Texas, and they went full DIY madness with it. Nothing but old analogue gear here. They even bounced guitar tracks onto actual cassettes and reel-to-reel players just to get that wobbly, vintage warmth. This isn’t squeaky-clean digital thing, it’s got soul, it’s got grit, and there’s this beautiful instability that makes the whole track feel like it’s breathing.

“Fall Behind” is The Shrubs basically saying “watch this” as they blow the doors off their old sound and come charging in with something totally electric. They’re showing off everything they’ve learned, everything they’ve become, and most importantly, they’re rocking harder than ever.
