Seattle’s newest export, Shattered Vein, just let out their single “Fun,” the opening from their upcoming album ‘In Decay’. This is music from a family of tracks with dirt under their nails and fire in their belly, the kind that make you remember exactly why grunge blew such a massive hole in music history.
Shattered Vein started as a bunch of dedicated living room musicians who embody that real spirit. Dalton Smith leads this crew, and these folks decided to go all in. No half-measures here. This is a united front of musicians channelling something rare and real together.
“Fun” is a track built on a powerful, and painfully honest, foundation. Dalton Smith reveals the song was inspired by his own mental health struggles stemming from his time in the Marine Corps, and the subsequent battles with addiction. These are lyrics forged from actual trauma, giving the whole thing a weight you just can’t fake. And that title, “Fun”, lands with this bitter irony that’s perfectly in sync with the dark, contrasting spirit of Seattle’s rock legends. The recording process itself, done in a guest room that apparently “annoyed the hell out of” Smith’s wife, is a key part of what makes this album special. No fancy studio tricks, no big-budget polish—just pure emotion captured on tape in a makeshift space where the real magic went down.
A buddy of theirs in the grunge scene called this their “Bleach,” and it’s a spot-on assessment. “Fun” has that same energy that screams “we’re just getting started.” It’s everything you want from a band that’s got something real to say. ‘In Decay’ drops October 5th, and if “Fun” is any sign of what’s coming, Shattered Vein’s about to stake their claim in Seattle’s legendary rock scene. Mark our words.
