An Interview with ESCAPIST

Is there a specific moment in your career that felt like a turning point?

There was definitely a moment that felt like a turning point for us. We had been playing metal together, but one day, something completely different was created—something we jokingly called “dance music.” It was unlike anything we had done before, yet it felt natural. After that, one of us kept chasing the other, practically begging to finalize the track. It never made it onto the album, but that moment shifted our perspective. It showed us that we weren’t confined to one sound—we could follow inspiration wherever it led. And here we are now, still chasing that feeling.

How do you handle creative blocks or self-doubt?

We don’t believe in forcing creativity. If inspiration isn’t there, we don’t try to push through it like we’re under a whip or on a deadline. We take breaks—sometimes really long ones. There have been times when we’ve left a song unfinished for years, only to come back and record a single phrase again because it didn’t sound the way we wanted. Creativity has to come naturally. That’s why we allow ourselves the time and space to get things exactly how we envision them, no matter how long it takes. Sometimes it feels it takes too long, but that’s a different story!

What’s one misconception people have about being a musician?

The harsh reality is, once the creative process ends — whether it’s finalizing the lyrics or completing the whole song — the magic of the process ends and the real work begins. For us, it often feels like another full-time job on top of our regular ones. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work, from recording and mixing to marketing and promotion. But despite how demanding it can be, even if this feels like another full-time job, it is still the best job in the world. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing the final product come together and knowing it resonates not only with you, but with other people as well.

What’s the story behind your latest song/album?

Our new single, “Spiraling Down,” comes out on the 8th of April, and it’s a bit of a journey itself. It was initially written as a metal song, complete with guitars and a demo version of the lyrics, as part of one of our side projects. We created the demo, and it sounded great, but the project didn’t last long, and it wasn’t released. Over time, we revisited the track as ESCAPIST, refined it, and fully reimagined it. Now, it’s one of the most outstanding songs on the album. The transformation from that early metal version to what it is now reflects a lot of where we’ve been and where we’re going. It’s exciting to see something that had so much potential finally come to life in a way that feels right.

What’s next for you—any exciting projects or goals on the horizon?

After releasing our full-length album in May, we’re really excited to dive into new material. The journey has never really stopped for us over the last five years. The music we’re releasing now has aged like a good wine, especially since most of it was written in 2020-2021. But we’ve got a lot of fresh tracks that reflect who we are at this point in time. Once the album is out, we’ll focus on pushing those new ideas forward. There’s always something brewing in the background, and we can’t wait to see where this next chapter takes us.
