Robot Hive – Black Umbrella Romancer

Black Umbrella Romancer is a song that breaks boundaries and blends multiple distinct genres making you dance and rock out. Robot Hive is a group of musicians across Canada formed in 2011 whose sound is a blend of rock, jazz, electronic, country, and more. Their latest single, Black Umbrella Romancer is a song that sounds violent and striking with aggressive drumlines, guitar riffs, and catchy hooks enough to stay on your mind. The group is comprised of Dan Besuijen, Chris Notenboom, Matt Kaip, Les Schaeffer, and Elton Roscoe who all share various roles and add their unique twist to the track’s tone.

The song starts simply with a repeating electronic keyboard riff that picks up with a heavier synth sound and drums that will make your head nod to the beat. The vocals are mesmerizing and layered well which makes the song sound completely whole. Each of the instruments is timed perfectly to the beat and supports the dynamic of the vocals playing louder and softer depending on the instance. As you’re dancing to the electronic sound and beat, the alt-rock-sounding guitars strikingly enter the song and now you’re rocking out all of a sudden.

Black Umbrella Romancer is all about the duality of love where innocence and violence meet. This theme is a perfect match for the song’s mix of lighter electronic sounds with the high notes of the synths and the vocals and the darker gritty mix of the percussions, bass, and guitars. Making it a great representation of the group’s boundary-breaking style.
