Tony Lio’s latest song, “Nyx,” is a collaboration with Matthew Pelosi of Gozo’s Lair in Boonton,
New Jersey, who previously co-produced Lio’s track “Sweet Romantic.” The song features
guest vocals from Lupe Dragon, an alternative singer-songwriter from Wayne, New Jersey, and
a close friend of Lio. Despite their deep bond, “Nyx” marks their first official collaboration.
The song is a captivating piece aptly named after the goddess of the night. It features a
powerful slide guitar from the start and captivating vocals by Lio, showing his vocal personality
and passion. Lio begins the song with a deep, sonorous voice, giving the lyrics a weighty feel
that matches the song’s strong, driving rhythm. However, when the chorus kicks in, Lio’s voice
shifts to higher tones, bringing a sense of expansiveness and uplift to the melody.
The introduction of a Lupe Dragon’s vocal adds a dreamy, esoteric quality to the song.
Production choices in “Nyx” stand out, especially the drums, which have a rich, full sound
reminiscent of 80s percussion. This retro touch adds depth and warmth to the track, infusing
each beat with purpose.
With “Nyx”, Tony Lio kills two birds with a stone: He creates a fantastic song by examining the
beauty and mystery of the night while also paying homage to the goddess.
